Who would have thought that a dispute about a trade deal could have come to this? Police used stun grenades and tear gas today on protesters in Independence Square in the centre of the Ukrainian capital, Kiev. The latest violence has claimed the lives of at least twenty-five people. It follows the government's decision to reject a far-reaching trade agreement with the European Union, and accept a 15 billion dollar Russian bailout instead. Olexiy Solohubenko is an international news editor here at the BBC; he's also Ukrainian. He told us why people felt so strongly about something that is - after all - only a trade deal? EU foreign ministers are now promising sanctions against the Ukrainian government, following the crackdown on protesters. Russia though blames the West for interfering.Tim Ash, an expert on eastern Europe at Standard Bank in London talked to us about whether Ukraine was now caught in a tug of war between Russia and the EU.
