Protesters on the streets of Brussels today voiced their anger at what they claim is a major u-turn by Europe on the environment. They believe new European targets on renewable energy and emissions just aren't tough enough. There'll no longer be legally binding renewable energy goals for individual countries. Instead, the EU as a whole will have to get 27 per cent of its energy from renewables by the year 2030. And cut carbon emissions by 40 percent, compared with 1990 levels. We discussed the EU's new environmental blueprint with Wendel Trio, director of the campaigning group Climate Action Network Europe; and first, Connie Hedegaard, European Commissioner for Climate Action.
