The former South African president passed away last night in Johannesburg. He'd been ill for some time.
He fought against and eventually defeated the apartheid system, under which a white minority ruled. He spent 27 years in jail before emerging to become the country's first black leader. Nelson Mandela also lent his weight, influence and experience to the peace process here in Northern Ireland. DUP's Jeffrey Donaldson says although he didn't agree with the violence of the ANC he found Mandela an inspiring man who fully embraced peace.
