Who wants a free trade deal?

It's called the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership - a free trade deal between the European Union and the United States aimed at making trade and investment between the two easier to carry out.

Its backers say it will result in more jobs and growth and assist Europe in its long-term recovery from the economic crisis. And those backers include virtually everyone in government and big business.

Talks aimed at thrashing out a deal will resume next week. But increasingly dissenting voices are being heard.

George Monbiot, the British writer and political activist, has written an article in the Guardian newspaper saying the transatlantic trade deal is a " full-frontal assault on democracy." He argues " Brussels has kept quiet about a treaty that would let rapacious companies subvert laws, rights and national sovereignty."
