Steve Wright - First show on Radio 1
His tenure on BBC National afternoon radio appears to have gone on for ever. 13 years on Radio 1; and 17 years, to date, on Radio 2.
Alongside Moyles and Mills, this second generation BBC Radio 1 stalwart was grown by commercial radio. After working in the BBC backroom, he was to be on-air at Reading's Radio 210, overseas radio and Radio Luxembourg before graduating to BBC National radio. As he fell from Radio 1 in the Bannister 90s years whilst briefly on breakfast, he returned to commercial radio, and popped up in many stations as a consultant for a period. Those he helped were those who'd grown up with him, so were mighty impressed.
Here, enjoy Steve's first show on Radio 1 in January 1979. It was, as you'll hear, Saturday night.
