a visit to the World Trade Center Memorial

My first visit to New York City was in 1974. At that time the twin towers of the World Trade Center were still under construction. They wouldn't open until the following year. When I visited again in 2002 they no longer existed. All that remained was a massive hole in the ground. Today a memorial stands in memory to those who lost their lives that fateful day in September 2001. Two large rectangular pools occupy the footprints of the former buildings. A continuous chest-high table like an altar with a slanting top encircles each pool. Staring over the top of it, you see the water of the pool pouring down into a hole in the center. The Falling water creates a loud roar. On the surface of the alter-like barrier are engraved the names of those who lost their lives here. As of August 16, 2013, when this recording was made, neither the Memorial Museum nor The Freedom Tower are yet open.
