A walk in rural Connecticut using the BlindSquare app.
This morning I set out from my daughters house on a walk. She lives in a rural area of northeastern Connecticut. I am totally unfamiliar with the area and thought it would be interesting to see if BlindSquare could help me in my navigation. Though I am fairly confident in my navigation skills, I doubt whether I would have walked as far without the use of some kind of navigation tool. The area is semi rural and the roadway has no sidewalk or curb. The road is winding and many driveways can easily be confused with street intersections. BlindSquare definitely did help me stay on course. Before departing, I marked my daughters home as one of my saved places. The app alerted me when I was within 600 feet and then chimed when I actually got to her property. I give it high marks for this. At one point, I veered into the entrance of a factory. Even though I went about 100 yards into the factories Drive, BlindSquare continued to tell me that I was on Rrixtown Road. The mistake became obvious when I encountered a gate. I then reversed my course and use the sound of a passing motorist two wants again orient myself to the highway. Certainly, a blind person still must rely on his basic orientation skills. #BlindSquare
