Captain Jenna Millington

Junior Doctor Captain Jenna Millington (28) from Offwell in Devon has swapped her role as a GP working with the soldiers and their families in the military base Warminster for the Role 3 Hospital in Camp Bastion, Helmand.

Captain Millington has the challenging job of junior Emergency Department doctor on call for those casualties requiring immediate attention and sometimes suffering traumatic injuries. She is also responsible for monitoring the daily treatment of surgical patients on the ward. In Camp Bastion she provides care for all UK, ISAF and Afghan forces as well as the locally employed civilians and contract workers. She deployed to Afghanistan in mid April and is just starting to settle in to life on camp.

For British Forces serving in Helmand the UK Medical Group delivers full spectrum medical care support from the point of injury through hospital treatment to evacuation back to the UK.

This is Captain Millington’s first tour in Afghanistan and although she misses her boyfriend who is a serving officer with the Princess of Wales’ Royal Regiment in Germany, she admits that she misses her dog Alfie ‘as much - if not a little bit more’. She was sponsored by the Army to study Medicine at Birmingham University and is thoroughly enjoying working at the forefront of military medical services in Helmand.

Captain Millington’s parents, Tricia and David, still live in Offwell and are fully supportive of her career choice, especially as her father is a retired RAF pilot now flying commercial aircraft.

The current UK Med Gp deployed on Operation Herrick is based around 5 Medical Regiment providing the pre-hospital emergency treatment, the deployed ambulance service and primary health care, which is a deployed GPs surgery. 33 Field Hospital provides the core staff responsible for the deployed hospital care of the troops in Afghanistan.
