Viking Gold was born out of the necessity for radio stations to move away from FM/AM simulcasting. Viking had already split its service on Saturday and Sunday afternoons to offer sport on AM and music on FM. Though not the first station to completely split on a permanent basis Viking Gold was an early example of the now familiar Gold service complete with resings of those classic 60s PAMS jingles.

The honour of opening the new station on 1 November 1988 fell to Peter Fairhead.
