Living off the land in days gone by (Part 1/2)
Malin Head has seen its fair share of Mother Nature at her best – and at her worst. None worse perhaps than the Winter of 1947, when the headland was closed off for six weeks due to heavy snow. Far from foundering, the locals survived by helping each other and using their knowledge of the land and the sea around them to survive the ordeal. We used that incident to kick start our radio series, Rambling House, on how exactly folk lived off the land in Inishowen in days gone by.
