Radio Scotland (pirate) - Launch

Episode 620,   Dec 30, 2012, 01:08 PM

Another one of the 1960s offshore pirate stations, exploiting a legal loophole, by broadcasting from a ship outside territorial waters.

This one is fondly-remembered. Based on a ship called the Comet, it came on-air on New Year's Eve 1965. Stuart Henry, my idol Steve Merike, and, famously, Richard Park , broadcast on the station which was the brainchild of Tommy Shields (pictured), who'd been at publishers, DC Thompson. Such was his personal disappointment of not keeping this proud station on the air after the law changed in 1967, he died just months later.

Enjoy here the first moments on-air and the catchy theme by the Carrick Folk Four.
