Sir Ian Trethowan
Ian Trethowan was 46 when he moved from being significant on-air talent to a BBC management post.
As MD of BBC Network Radio from 1970 to 1976, he was at the helm when Kenny Everett was sacked following, rather than because of, the remark about the wife of the transport minister only passing her driving test because she had 'slipped the examiner a fiver'.
Following a spell as TV Head, Trethowan became Director General of the BBC from 1977 to 1982.
He died on 12 December 1990.
Hear here, in the delicious RP for which he was a great advocate, Ian telling of his surprise at being approached to take up the radio role.
