Down Your Way
Some sounds evoke the taste of a forgotten day, not least for a generation united by their choice from so few media outlets. Thus it was for those who remember the familiar galloping theme tune to ‘Down Your Way’.
Down Your Way began on the BBC Home Service in 1946, running subsequently on Radio 4 until to 1992. The programme paid jolly visits to towns across the country, chatting informally to their inhabitants and playing their requests. Stewart MacPherson hosted the show at launch, followed by Richard Dimbleby, Franklin Engelmann and Brian Johnston until 1987. The programme was then ‘axed’, as they say in the press, before it returned following an outcry; then running safely until 1992.
Enjoy here a slice of aged continuity from Brian’s day; and a delicious sniff of this great British show. A show which quite simply spelt ‘Sunday’.
