Ron Onions - Capital & LBC news founder
Ron Onions is credited with significant early work in commercial radio news.
He began his career in press, before joining the BBC which took him to New York. Back in Blighty, he set up the large Capital newsroom in 1973, before moving off to ‘troubled’ LBC in 1974. It was there where he is credited for establishing a more energetic, maybe ‘tabloid’ news style with an operational agility which was then unfamiliar in British radio. Against the odds, under Ron's leadership, LBC held its own with renowned coverage of both domestic and foreign news at a critical time.
After leaving LBC, Ron became the first programme controller of Jazz FM. He died in May 2012
