Kenny Everett - Driving Test
So many of the greats are sacked now and again. Having been sidelined for making remarks about the lucrative religious programming on the pirate Radio London, Kenny pushed out the boat a little on joining the BBC too.
He'd been fairly outspoken on the needle-time restrictions, contrary to the terms of his contract, so tolerance from BBC Radio's Managing Director, Ian Trethowan, was at a low when Kenny suggested in July 1970 that the Transport Minister's wife might have slipped a fiver to her driving instructor. Prompted by the news bulletin within his Saturday programme, it was clearly not a serious remark. But it was the final straw. Kenny was despatched to the wilderness for a while.
A youngster called Noel took over the slot.
